Check Engine Light On? Here's What To Do First
A Ford-certified tech walks through what to do (and not do) when your check engine light comes on — before you spend money at a parts store.
That little yellow light on your dash covers hundreds of possible faults — from a loose gas cap to a failing transmission. Here's the order I'd approach it in if it were my daily driver.
1. Is it flashing or steady?
A steady light means "something is off, get it checked soon." A flashing light means "an active misfire is happening and can damage the catalytic converter — pull over and stop driving hard."
2. Check the gas cap
Loose gas caps are the single most common cause of a check engine light. Tighten it until it clicks a few times. The light may take a day or two to clear on its own.
3. Don't let a parts store diagnose it
Free code readers give you a code, not a diagnosis. A P0300 (random misfire) can be plugs, coils, injectors, compression, a vacuum leak, or bad fuel. Buying "the part the code says" is a coin flip. Get a real diagnosis — live data, freeze frame, and component testing — before you spend money.
