A/C Not Cold? Why a Recharge Alone Rarely Fixes It
A/C-certified mobile tech explains why a $50 can of refrigerant is almost always a waste of money — and what actually fixes a warm A/C.
Every summer I get calls from folks who dumped a can of refrigerant into their A/C, got cold air for a week, then went right back to warm. Here's why.
A/C is a sealed system
If refrigerant is low, it leaked. Refilling without finding the leak just funds another leak. Sometimes the leak is small enough that a recharge lasts a season — but usually not.
Overcharging destroys compressors
The cheap cans at the parts store don't measure by weight, and "just add a little more" is how compressors die. Overcharge equals high head pressure equals cooked compressor.
The right way
Evacuate the system, vacuum-hold to confirm no leaks, then recharge to the OEM refrigerant weight with the correct PAG oil. That's how a shop does it — and that's what I do mobile in your driveway. Certified for both R-134a and R-1234yf.
